I know that I don’t only speak for myself when I say that I would prefer to be in a sunny, spacious studio apartment where I can determine the decor, find only my hair in the shower, and not wake up to the sound of someone else having sex.  However, I also know that the studio life isn’t feasible when I have to negotiate high housing prices at the same time that I want to live in a great location and have my dream job. According to The Albuquerque Tribune, rent prices are soaring and people are spending significant amounts of income on their rent.  (In San Francisco, this number reaches 50% for many low-income earners.)[1]

So, is there a way to get a great apartment, have a great job, and still save money?  Yes. It’s the inevitable and obvious solution of roommates. Before you conjure the negative images of those roommates who have saved their earwax in a jar or invited their closest thirty friends over every night, remember that there are advantages to having any roommate and there are roommates who could be compatible with your lifestyle and you with theirs.
